New Mailbox for Review Requests and Other General Correspondence

On January 26, 2010, a technical glitch prevented the previous mailbox from accepting any additional comments. I've learned from experience that it's a waste of time to ask Google/Blogger for help, so I put that old message container out to pasture. If you're looking for comments from January 25, 2010 or before, you can find them here.

The gentlemen pictured above will continue to see to it that any new correspondence (requests, general comments, questions, etc.) is delivered to us in a timely fashion.

WHAT TO DO IF SOMETHING "DOESN'T WORK": Go here, and send an e-mail to me describing the problem that you have encountered and what you would like us to do to assist. We will no longer respond to "The -------- doesn't work!" comments, nor will they be published. I will say this: Typing usually works better than copying and pasting. If that doesn't help, go here to download a list of possible solutions to the technical difficulties that you're experiencing.

  1. To the people who had left the last few comments in the old Mailbox (http://record-fiend.blogspot.com/2009/04/mailbox-for-comments-requests-and-other.html):

@ Anonymous who is the Johnny Darrell fan,

Yes, I have "With Pen in Hand" and "The Son of Hickory Holler's Tramp" as well as a few other items that may be of interest to you. I will post them all in the next few months. I'm happy to know that you've enjoyed what's been made available so far.

@ Anonymous looking for "Introduction" by Witch,

I'll see what I can do. That's been on my want list for awhile, too.

@ Anonymous looking for material by Professor Johnson & His Gospel Singers & Reverend Louis Overstreet,

I must confess that my gospel collection is not as deep as my blues collection, so I'm afraid I don't have anything by those guys. If I ever acquire any of their albums, I'll be sure to post them.

  3. a response to "." (original message in our old mailbox), regarding moby grape:

don't know if you caught it yet, but "legendary grape" was recently posted here:

    http://phrockblog.blogspot.com/2010/01/moby-grape-legendary-grape-1989-us.html

"moby grape '84" is still coming, i promise. i'll get around to it as soon as i can. i know my good friend the Fiend himself is also anxious to hear it. (that said, neither of you should get your hopes too high--though, better than anyone, i certainly understand the need to have it.)

i'll be sure and look for "fine wine". thanks for the tip.

  4. actually, ".", if you have a link for the moby grape/"fine wine" you mentioned, please pass it along. i poked around, and couldn't find too much musical content other than this clip:

(which may have been what you were referring to?) either way, let me know if you can.

  10. RE: the BOMArchiveHelper issue--

Part of the problem, at least in my experience, is that BOMArchiveHelper does not handle passwords. I haven't tried UnArchiver, but opening a password protected file in Stuffit Expander seems to do the trick.

Of course, sometimes a PC created zip or rar just cannot be extracted on a Mac for mysterious reasons.

Two of the songs were written and performed by us back in the sixties but never recorded. (...) It's a new world compared to how things worked back then and we need to figure out what the best way is to get these out so our fans can hear them. Any ideas you may have on this we would love to hear."

  14. Hmm, I wonder if you're bumping up to blogger storage limits> I notice that you upload images directly to blogger instead of hosting them elsewhere, this will eventually cause you to run out of storage space for this blog.

    ReplyDelete
  15. @ rickdog,

Nope, no storage limit issues. I only upload the album covers directly to Blogger. All other photos and/or artwork I host on my Flickr account. At this point, I've only used about 1% of my Blogger storage capacity, so I've got awhile before this becomes a problem. I appreciate you looking out for me and the blog.

  24. Hi! I've found the solution to download problems on my computer. I always copied and pasted the password right off the site into the extraction. That worked fine on my old computer but I recently got a new one and it definitely doesn't work. I played around with it and it will only work if the password is typed in (no caps of course). Anyway, hopefully this will be a help to others. As always , thank you for all the great music!

  33. Hello R. Fiend,
I think it was a couple of weeks ago i discovered your blog; dl'ed something that didn't unzip. (maybe was drunk) but visited a gain a couple of days ago and haven't left. Just finished grabbing some stuff from October 2009 (started at current date) and most links are still good! I have found it interesting to get exposure to some bands from sixties that i shockingly did not know like Country Weather and Freedom's Children and begin to appreciate them like the bands i saw and heard locally on the West Coast. Almost if you have the sixties blood running through the body one is already acclimated to the music working even if it is new to me. not sure if i am following this either. also as a real blues fan i have not listened to tons of pre-war blues as i don't like that 78rpm level of fidelity but what i have heard so far from your blog is a different story... so thanks again. your hard work is appreciated by many I am sure

    ReplyDelete
  34. @ majorcurry,

I greatly appreciate the kind words and hope that you're not continuing to have problems with unzipping files. Also, if any URLs are not working to the point that a particular album is unobtainable, please let me know. As you can see, if you're a fan of 1960s rock and the blues, you're in the right place! Thanks for the comments.

  35. RF,

Nothing else Jewish, Klezmer, Yiddish could be found by any chance?

    ReplyDelete
  36. @ Darkman,

I'm afraid not. That Arhoolie/Folklyric klezmer comp and the Dave Tarras CD posted previously are the only two items in my collection that fall within the parameters of your request. I do have some albums by Israeli rock musicians from the 1960s and 1970s - the Churchill's (sic), Jericho Jones, and Danny Ben-Israel - but they might be too psychedelic for your tastes. If you're curious, though, I'd be happy to post reviews at some point.

A relatively recent new blog, however, might have the sorts of things that you're looking for. It's called "Holy Warbles" and has an absolutely amazing selection of world music, much of it from the pre-World War II era. Kindly pay the site a visit, and let the administrator, owlqaeda, know that I referred you. Put in a request for vintage Jewish, Yiddish, and/or klezmer music over there. If anybody has more of that kind of stuff, owlqaeda does.

  49. Thanks for the downloads and the advice on passwords ...I was having trouble but here's how I solved it, after reading this page and downloading the Word doc with the actual password in it...

I usually just double-click on the .zip file... but that wouldn't work. That's when I sought out this info on this page... Unstuffit Expander does work, all you need to is OPEN Unstuffit so that the program and logo window is visible. Drag the .zip file over it ... and it will open AFTER you TYPE IN the password (don't cut and paste!)

Hey man, that's a great blog you put up. You got some pretty good oldies and rare early american music wich I've never seen before in any other blog on the web. Well, maybe on El Diablo Tun Tun, but that's out for quite a while now. That Yazoo Records collection is simply amazing! For years I've been trying to find these stuff. There's only one odd "detail" that caught my attention: that photo of the asian guy... is he really eating a human fetus?? If so, it's a highly sick, disgusting and unnecessary move! Why the hell did you put that bizarre picture among legendary icons like Kerouac, Big Bill Broonzy , Fred McDowell, Muddy Waters, Charlie Patton etc? I tell you man, I just discovered your site and I was amazed by the great collection of music and high quality of your writing... then I was faced with that! I don't know if anyone have asked this before, but what the hell is that for? I mean: what's the point? It really disturbed me to the point I wanted to leave the blog right away. It's such a great source of incredible good music you got there... i really can't understand. Anyway, I hope I'm wrong and that's not a human fetus on that picture.

    ReplyDelete
  67. @ Alexandre,

Thank you for the compliments. Regarding the photo of the Asian gentleman that you find so disturbing, I'm not sure what he's eating. As for why it was included in the gallery, I have an interest in thought-provoking pictures such as this one. Judging by your comments, it appears that it also caused some contemplation on your part. If so, mission accomplished because anything that makes people think is good. If it bothers you too much, then I suggest that you find other blogs to visit. My worldview and interests are certainly not for everyone. Perhaps your revulsion to this photo says more about yourself than it does me or the person in it. Anyway, I'm just glad to see that the picture of the Studebaker Avanti II didn't offend you as well.

  72. Hi Fiend,

I just want to say "thanks" for all the great music. I've been a longtime lurker (and leech), and this has long been one of my favorite online destinations. I'm wondering why most DL's are now FLAC only. I know it probably cuts the UL'ing time in half, and converting them isn't a problem, but I miss the old days' simplicity of tagging files. If you could find a way to include the artist's name in the FLAC info, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again, and keep up the excellent work!
